When shipbuilder Gulf Ship, LLC arrived on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 2006, it was only a year after the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina. As the company built out its production site along an industrial canal in the Bayou Bernard Industrial Park, it was apparent there would be a need to protect parts of the facility from the effects of stormwater erosion.
In 2007, the company chose Submar's UltraFlex Articulating Concrete Block Mats (ACM) manufactured by Block USA to line a sloped section of Gulf Ship's 37-acre facility. The area was covered with geotextile, then large cranes lowered the ACM into position.UltraFlex are environmentally-friendly, provide a traversable surface and offer time-tested strength. The product conforms to ground contours and is known as a value-added solution for erosion control challenges.
Today, Gulf Ship is known as a world-class shipbuilder and recognized by Harrison County and the state of Mississippi for its positive economic impact on the region.
